The Porto Metropolitan Area (AMP) was distinguished by the United Nations for its commitment to improving Civil Protection responses and the sustainability of the region. The distinction was presented during the 14th National Meeting of Resilient Towns and Cities, taking place in Angra do Heroísmo, in the Azores.

The “Certificate of Commitment to Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience” was delivered to the AMP Vice-President Margarida Belém and the Metropolitan Executive Officer Tiago Araújo during the Meeting’s opening session.

"This recognition reinforces the commitment of the AMP and its 17 municipalities to promote integrated policies for prevention, preparedness and response to risks, consolidating its path as an increasingly resilient territory prepared for future challenges", said Margarida Belém, Vice-President of the Porto Metropolitan Council.

The award of that international diploma, issued by the UNDRR (United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction), formalises AMP’s adherence to the MCR2030 – Making Cities Resilient 2030 programme. It is a global initiative to ensure that cities become more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable by 2030 in the face of challenges posed by natural disasters and climate change.

The 14th National Meeting of Resilient Towns and Cities, which ends this Friday (May 22), brings together experts, mayors and national and international entities. It addresses topics such as extreme weather events, volcanology, memory and impact of the 1980 earthquake, as well as municipal best practices and international cooperation in the field of civil protection and resilience.
