The Porto Metropolitan Area (AMP) applied for the European programme URBAC IV – Designing Cities that Move with Us with its project Urban Sports Lab, a project that aims to harness underutilised public spaces for the practice of informal sport.

According to Metropolitan Executive Officer Orlando Leal, with this application the AMP hopes to continue to contribute to the creation of “more accessible, inclusive and well-being-oriented cities”.

“The application is thus based on a shared vision of urban transformation, geared towards valuing public space and converting it into more inclusive, dynamic places that promote movement, health and social coexistence”, reinforces Orlando Leal.

The project covers the 17 municipalities of the AMP and is aimed at all AMP citizens, although focusing on most vulnerable communities and people in isolation.

Each project partner will implement a local action, documenting its process in an Action Portfolio, thus systematizing the experience and sharing results.

The application to the URBAN SPORT LAB – Designing Cities that Move with Us action network, submitted under the URBACT IV programme, is the result of an enlarged European partnership, made up of cities and territories committed to the promotion of more active and inclusive urban spaces. That partnership includes the AMP, as the leading partner, representing its 17 municipalities, as well as the Municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân (Netherlands), the Comune di Viareggio (Italy), Vejle Municipality (Denmark), the Municipality of Škofja Loka (Slovenia), Saldus Municipality (Latvia), the Municipality of Akamas (Cyprus) and the Municipality of Shijak (Albania).
