Since Thursday morning, the Unir network in the Porto Metropolitan Area has 53 new electric buses, which will serve the municipalities of Gondomar, Valongo, Paredes and Santo Tirso. The new vehicles are more environmentally friendly and offer greater comfort to passengers.

According to the president of Transportes Metropolitanos do Porto (TMP), Nuno Neves de Sousa, with the acquisition of 53 new electric vehicles by Alsa, the operator of the Gondomar/Valongo/Paredes/Santo Tirso section of Unir, “a firm step has been taken in transforming mobility in the Porto Metropolitan Area”.

“Each electric bus means fewer emissions, less noise, better air quality and a better quality of life for the population. It also represents a conscious choice on the part of public authorities and operators: the choice to invest in cleaner, more efficient and more environmentally friendly mobility”, added the president of TMP at a ceremony held in Gondomar.

With the new vehicles, the Unir network in the Porto Metropolitan Area now has 113 fully electric buses, 129 natural gas vehicles and 11 hybrids which, in addition to contributing to decarbonisation, create better transport conditions for the citizens of Greater Porto, as highlighted by the Chief Executive Officer of the Porto Metropolitan Area, Agostinho Branquinho.

Lot 2 is the lot with the most validations in the entire Unir operation, totalling 12,215,831 validations, which represents a 13.3% increase compared to 2024. “These figures show that sustainability and operational efficiency go hand in hand”, emphasised the president of TMP.

In fact, UNIR stood out in 2025 as the operator with the highest growth in the entire Andante universe, registering 36.6 million validations, 15.3% more than in 2024, when 31.5 million were registered. "This significant increase reflects the direct impact of the reorganisation and expansion of the road transport network, but it also reflects something deeper: people's growing confidence in public transport," concluded Nuno Neves de Sousa, announcing for May the start of the development of an Urban Mobility Plan for the Porto Metropolitan Area, which will subsequently be approved by the Porto Metropolitan Council, chaired by Pedro Duarte.
