The Metro do Porto is a public transport system covering the Porto Metropolitan Area and consisting of an electrified underground rail network in the centre of Porto and on the surface in the periphery.
This network is divided into 6 metropolitan lines and spread across seven municipalities of the Porto Metropolitan Area: Porto, Maia, Matosinhos, Póvoa de Varzim, Vila do Conde, Vila Nova de Gaia and Gondomar. It has a total of 81 stations spread over 70 km of duplicate commercial lines, mostly on the surface, 9.5 km of the network being underground.
The surface light Metro of the Porto Metropolitan Area was developed to combine the advantages of the operation of conventional metro systems with the advantages of accessibility and emotional comfort of surface public transport. Having been developed to interact directly with the city, it features a very strong component of urban integration that goes beyond the architectural aspects of the infrastructures of the system itself.
The Metro do Porto reconciles mobility needs with the duties of safety, respect for the environment and social responsibility.
The concept of mobility refers to the Metro do Porto’s concern about citizens with disabilities, elderly people, children, pregnant women, adults with young children, people temporarily physically disabled and people carrying luggage and bags.
The shareholder structure includes the Portuguese State, directly and indirectly through STCP and CP, with 60 % of the share capital, and the Porto Metropolitan Area, with 40 % (including the municipalities covered by the light metro system).
