The AMP and several partners have submitted an application to the European Commission's "Europe for Citizens Programme", strand 2 "Democratic engagement and civic participation", activity "Network of Towns".

The project was developed in partnership with eight partners: the AMP, the Milan Metropolitan Area, the ALDA - European Association for Local Democracy (which coordinates the project together with Milan), as well as the metropolitan cities of Bari, Lyon, Zagreb, Barcelona and Riga.

The main objectives of the project were: To contribute to the development of a more active and participative citizenship in the cities involved, as well as to enhance the sense of European identity, considering the issues of inclusion and integration of its inhabitants (namely the challenge of integrating immigrants). It is planned to build a thematic network between metropolitan cities in Europe to exchange views and thereby achieve the proposed objectives.

To achieve these objectives, a series of activities were carried out, from which we highlight the organisation of 5 international events (seminars), the development of activities at a local level (local meetings with entities, the creation of a website and the making of a documentary film).

The application was submitted on 1 March 2016, and a grant of €150,000.00 was approved for the entire project, which lasted 24 months (starting in September 2016). The AMP’s grant share was €18,920.00 to cover the various actions provided for in the project.

The Porto Metropolitan Area hosted an international seminar in September 2017 on the theme: "The Role of Metropolitan Areas as International Brands".
