The Porto Metropolitan Area recognises social cohesion as an essential pillar for ensuring a fairer, more inclusive and balanced territory, where everyone can live with dignity and opportunities. In this section, we bring together projects, programmes and initiatives that reflect the AMP's commitment to promoting equality, solidarity and social integration.

Significant challenges remain, such as reducing socio-economic inequalities, fighting poverty and exclusion, promoting gender equality, integrating vulnerable communities and migrants, and ensuring universal access to quality services – education, health, housing and mobility. These problems are exacerbated by inter-municipal and intra-municipal asymmetries, which require coordinated and effective responses.

Social cohesion is also linked to sustainability, quality of life and the active participation of people in building more resilient and supportive communities. Without social justice, there can be no sustainable economic, cultural, environmental or technological development.

For the AMP and its 17 municipalities, these challenges were decisive in defining strategies and policies that strengthen inter-municipal cooperation, promote social support networks and encourage citizen participation. The creation of collaborative governance mechanisms and specialised technical groups is a decisive step towards ensuring that no one is left behind.
