The 29- mile-long river Leça springs in Redundo, Santo Tirso, crosses the municipalities of Valongo and Maia and flows into the sea in Matosinhos, its whole hydrographic basin being comprised in the AMP’s geographical area.
The Leça Valley Basin corresponds to a wide extent and the areas with ecologic value/potential have been identified, delimited and categorized as Ecologic Structures by the municipalities comprised in it.
The River Leça’s corridor’s natural and cultural heritage may stand as a structuring element for the AMP’s ecologic infrastructure, landscape and territory, as well as a support for nature tourism, while providing the entire Metropolitan Area’s population with environmental services.
Given the theme’s strategic relevance, on 30 November 2018 the Porto Metropolitan Council approved a cooperation agreement between the municipalities of Santo Tirso, Valongo, Maia and Matosinhos, aiming at the production of a preliminary study for the improvement and appraisal of the River Leça’s corridor – Master Plan, containing written and drawn elements capable of supporting initiatives and promoting a coherent context dedicated to the River Leça’s corridor, from source to mouth.
In fact, it seems necessary and fundamental to organize and connect the ecologic and environmental structures of the several municipalities in order to determine intermunicipal methodologies, general strategies and action principles that can guide the interventions to be made along the river.
